Depression can be debilitating. It can even make the most mundane task such as sleeping, getting up from bed or eating seemingly very difficult.
Coping with depression is possible. Here are a few suggestions for alleviating the condition.
Stay active. Activities can distract you from thinking too much about your problems and can also channel your unspent energies to something good and productive. Keeping yourself active releases a hormone called endorphins –a natural mood booster – that will keep depression at bay. One of the activities you can get into is helping others. Not only will this give you a sense of achievement it will also change your perspective and make you see things differently. By changing the way you look at others, you too can change the way you look at yourself, your situation and your problem.
Become aware of your stressors and notice its beginnings. Determine what triggers it and examine your emotional and physical reactions.
Depression usually results from suppressed emotions. For this reason, it is advised that depressed people should express their emotions. You can talk it out with someone, or you can cry alone but one should avoid venting up one’s anger by doing something violent.
Depression is exhausting so build your physical reserves by:
Engage in proper exercise
Avoiding nicotine, excessive caffeine, and alcohol
Taking time to get into a relaxing mood
Eating well-balanced, nutritious meals and drinking lots of water
Getting enough sleep and be as consistent with your sleeping schedule as possible. When resting and you find yourself getting angry, frustrated, listless…. try keeping these negative feelings in the low and kept away from the bedroom. Relaxation techniques like breathing exercises, meditation and putting your negative thought in a bubble and imagining them float away can help one be more at peace and attuned to the self.
It takes time to get back on one’s feet but soon enough one can get out of depression and have a normal life once more.
